BEAT BOX THE CONSTITUTION

15 June 2016

Old Fort Prison Complex, Constitution Hill

The first of many #IAMCONSTITUTION workshops for primary and high schools, Beatboxing the Constitution combines education and entertainment. Jean Kitenge’s urban sound of vocal gymnastics and machine-like precision has students engaging with the Constitution and beatboxing their own Bill of Rights. In recognition of 16th June 1976, 22 learners from the Chief Albert Luthuli Primary School in Daveyton hopped on a CitySightseeing Red Bus to tour Johannesburg; their final stop was Constitution Hill for a beatboxing session.

These girls, aged between 6 and 13, are seasoned performers in their own right. Part of a creative arts programme run by volunteer teacher, Lungile Maboe, the group practices six days of every week. Their vast repertoire of plays, dances and songs are all based on the Constitution. Despite all the challenges they face on a daily basis, thanks to unsung hero Lungile Maboe, their academic performances have improved remarkably.
