CLOTHES, TOILETRIES, KNOWLEDGE

Lungi Maboe, teacher at the Chief Albert Luthuli Primary School (Daveyton) runs an after-school creative arts programme. Six days of every week, her group of 22 girls between the ages of 6 and 13 come together to engage in the creative arts and in their own scholastic enrichment.

These dynamic recitations and performances focus on the Constitution, our heritage and lessons learnt from our liberation icons. Supporting them enhances their programme offerings and creates opportunities for touring and visiting others schools and community groups.

For the launch of Mandela Month 2016, they performed a play about the life of Chief Albert Luthuli for his daughter Dr Albertina Luthuli and family in Daveyton to great emotion and applause.

The learners are from economically-challenged neighbourhoods who face negative influences in their communities. Ms Maboe volunteers her time and efforts to also ensure their basic needs are met such as clothes and toiletries. Remarkably, despite all these challenges, their academic performances have also improved.

This group of young girls never fail to impress and inspires all generations to play their part in living the Constitution.
